The wood is STAINED in a multiple layer process, using safe, non-toxic stains tested to meet or exceed European and ASTM toy safety standards. The color is so beautiful and translucent; you can see the beauty of the wood grain. Since the Selecta wooden toys are stained and not painted, they do NOT chip like some other toys we have seen that are heavily coated with yucky paint layers. The Selecta toys truly are heirloom quality toys to be handed down for generations.
