HomeSarah's Silk: Sarah's Silks Silk Costumes:  Sarah's Silks Play Silks - Directions for Making Folded Silk Bunny

Make a Folded Bunny
using a Sarah's Silks Play Silk

(photo coming soon!)

Directions for Making a Bunny Form with a Sarah’s Silks Square Silk

(1) Fold the silk square in half, then fold in half again, so that the square is now a quarter of the unfolded size. (The folded square will measure approximately 16 in. each side.)

(If you are starting out with a 16 in. or smaller cloth or silk, there is no need to fold in quarters.
When starting with a smaller cloth or silk, start with step 2 below.)

(2) Place the silk square diagonally in front of you, and then take each triangle corner (at the left and at the right), and fold inward (about 2 in.), then fold inward again, do this 3 or 4 times at each side of the silk (until there is no more fabric to fold in.)

You should now have a narrow, (folded-in from the left and folded in from the right), long thin rectangular shape, with a triangle shape at each end.

(3) Tie a loose knot at the top end, leaving a bunny size ear hanging out.
Bring the bottom triangular end through the loose knot; this becomes the second bunny ear. Arrange the silk into a bunny shape, arrange the ears (you may want to tuck into the knot any extra layers of silk in the ears -- if you have started out with a large silk folded into quarters there will be four layers of silk for each ear), then tie the knot tighter.

The knot becomes the bunny’s head, and the two triangular pieces are the bunny’s ears, and the fabric in between is arranged into the form of the bunny’s body.

The bunnies look especially cute if you make three or four of them in different pastel colors for Easter morning. Of course the silks can quickly be unknotted, and then, “Let the play begin!” as they become veils, skirts, a ceiling for a clubhouse, a river to jump over . . . then fold them back into a bunny again as you like. Older children enjoy learning to tie the silks into bunnies themselves. Have fun!
